Access the Ocean of Knowledge: Experience Science Spatially Through New Software
On behalf of the German Climate Computing Center (DKRZ) and the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht (HZG), the KitWare software firm has developed an extension (plugin) for 360-degree projection of ParaView. ParaView is 3D visualization and data analysis software that is widely utilised in science. The plugin was created according to specifications from both establishments. The extension is available immediately to all ParaView users and is free of charge, enabling interactive visualization of 3D data in a virtual 360-degree space using VR goggles and smartphones as well as in domed cinemas. more

Das Internationale Naturfilmfestival Green Screen wird vom 10. bis 14. September wieder tausende naturbegeisterte Zuschauer nach Eckernförde locken. Ein Film-Erlebnis der besonderen Art präsentieren die Küstenforscher des Helmholtz-Zentrums Geesthacht (HZG) den Green Screen-Besuchern: Neben dem Ostsee-Info-Center am Eckernförder Hafen wird in der Mobilen Kuppel des Forschungszentrums die animierte Fulldome-Produktion „Uhrwerk Ozean“ gezeigt. Neben der Kuppel liegt das Forschungsschiff „Ludwig Prandtl“ des Helmholtz-Zentrums im Eckernförder Hafen. Die Besucher können während des Festivals das Schiff und die Forschungseinrichtungen an Bord erkunden (vom 10. – 13. September jeweils von 13:00 bis 18:00 Uhr, der Eintritt ist frei). more
Small swirrels now so big
Under the leadership of Prof. Burkard Baschek, Director of the Institute of Coastal Research at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht, an international team of scientists succeeded in detecting a small ocean eddy for the first time in 2009 from an aircraft, investigating it from a ship directly on site. Two further comprehensive expeditions have since been carried out off the coast of California. The expeditions included experts from seven international institutions. more
